In recognition of her efforts to advance techniques that expand large-scale computation capabilities for data analysis and the life sciences, Giulia Guidi, assistant professor of computer science in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, will receive a 2026 IEEE Technical Community on High Performance Computing (TCHPC) Early Career Researchers Award for Excellence in High Performance Computing. 

Each year, the IEEE Computer Society gives the award to up to three individuals who have made "outstanding, influential, and potentially long-lasting contributions in the field of high-performance computing" in the first five years after completing their Ph.D. Guidi will receive the award in person at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis, (SC26) held Nov. 15-20 in Chicago. 

Guidi leads the ALPS Lab (Algorithms for Large-scale Parallel Systems) at Cornell.

"HPC is fundamentally about pushing the frontiers of what is computable, and it's a privilege to work alongside a community devoted to it," Guidi said. "Critically, bringing sparse linear algebra and parallel computing to the computational sciences, and scaling that work on rapidly evolving hardware, is a team effort, and I'm grateful to my ALPS Lab students, along with the mentors and collaborators who made the work possible."

SC26 will also feature Guidi as an invited speaker in a session focused on the growing role of advanced computing and artificial intelligence in biomedical research and healthcare. Her selection reflects the relevance of her computing research to today’s biological discovery. 

Guidi has been establishing sparse linear algebra as a way for scientists to analyze enormous amounts of complex data and accelerate scientific discovery. The approach highlights the role scalable computing plays in extracting insights from genomic datasets of increasing scale and complexity. Her group also develops software infrastructures for parallel machines to speed up data processing. Guidi's work makes advanced computing systems more accessible to researchers in life sciences, allowing them to ask questions that previously required computing capabilities beyond those available in the field.

Her work has previously been recognized by an NSF CAREER Award in 2026, the 2024 SIAM Activity Group on Supercomputing Early Career Prize, the 2023 Mario Gerla Award for Research in Computer Science, and the 2020 SIGHPC Computational & Data Science Fellowship.
